More than beautiful images

3D Visualisation for Ecologists & Ecological Consultancies

The Ruby Cube works alongside ecological consultancies as a visualisation partner, translating your data and assessments into imagery that gives your reports the visual weight they deserve.

3D Visualisation for Ecologists & Ecological Consultancies

As an ecologist, your reports carry the technical weight of a project — habitat surveys, Biodiversity Metric calculations, mitigation strategies, and management plans. But the people who need to act on your findings — clients, planning officers, committee members — often aren't ecologists themselves.

Working With Your Data

We accept habitat management plans, biodiversity metric calculation tools (the Defra Statutory Biodiversity Metric spreadsheet), Phase 1 and Phase 2 survey shapefiles, and GIS layers in standard formats. The more detailed the ecological data, the more specific and credible the resulting visualisation — but we can also work from earlier-stage concept plans where habitat design is still in development.

• Defra Statutory Biodiversity Metric outputs
• Phase 1/Phase 2 habitat survey data (shapefile, GIS)
• Habitat management and monitoring plans
• UK Habitat Classification mapping

How We Support Ecological Consultancy Work

Biodiversity Gain Plan Visualisation

Biodiversity Gain Plans require clear demonstration of the on-site and off-site habitat creation and enhancement that delivers the required net gain. We produce before-and-after renders, habitat zone diagrams, and aerial overviews that visually represent your metric calculations — making the BGP document more accessible to planning officers and easier for clients to understand and approve.

• Before-and-after renders aligned to metric baseline and post-intervention habitat parcels
• Habitat zone diagrams showing distinct habitat types and management areas
• Aerial overview renders for multi-parcel BNG schemes

Ecological Impact Assessment Support

Where an Ecological Impact Assessment (EcIA) forms part of an Environmental Impact Assessment, we can produce visualisation that supports your impact narrative — showing the existing habitat condition, the predicted impact, and proposed mitigation in visual form, consistent with Landscape Institute guidance on photomontage and visualisation.

Client Communication Tools

Many of your clients — developers, landowners, estate managers — are commissioning ecological work for the first time and don't fully understand what BNG delivery means in practice.

We can produce simple, clear visualisation that you can use in client meetings to explain habitat creation proposals before they're finalised — reducing back-and-forth and building client confidence in your recommendations.

Why Ecologists Partner With The Ruby Cube

We Speak Your Language

We're familiar with the Statutory Biodiversity Metric, UK Habitat Classification, Phase 1 habitat surveys, and JNCC condition assessment criteria. When you send us a habitat management plan or metric calculation spreadsheet, we understand what we're looking at — and we build visualisation that's consistent with your ecological assessment, not a generic interpretation of it.

We Help Strengthen Your Reporting

Visualisation doesn't replace the technical rigour of your ecological report — it extends its reach. A Biodiversity Gain Plan supported by accurate before-and-after renders is more persuasive to planning officers, more accessible to clients, and more compelling in public consultation. We position our work as a complement to yours.

White-Label & Subcontracted Arrangements

Many ecological consultancies subcontract visualisation to us as part of a wider client deliverable — we can work under your project management, deliver to your branding, or be introduced directly to your client as a specialist partner, whichever suits your client relationship.

FAQs

Can you work directly with our client, or only through us?

Either — we're flexible. Some consultancies prefer to manage the full client relationship themselves and use us purely as a production resource; others prefer to introduce us directly to the client as a named specialist. We'll work however suits your project structure.

Do you need a site visit to produce accurate visualisation?

Usually not — your survey data and our LiDAR terrain modelling are normally sufficient. For complex urban sites or where specific microhabitat features need representing, we may request additional photographs.

Can you produce visualisation at proposal stage, before the BGP is finalised?

Yes — we regularly support early-stage client discussions with concept visualisation, which can then be refined once the habitat management plan and metric calculations are finalised.
