Terrain Generation
Accurate terrain is the foundation of credible ecological visualisation. At The Ruby Cube, we always start by building precise digital terrain models for every project we visualise.

Terrain Generation for Ecological & Landscape 3D Visualisation
Accurate terrain is the foundation of credible ecological visualisation. A 3D render of a BNG habitat, a rewilded river valley, or a restored upland peatland is only as convincing as the landscape it sits in. At The Ruby Cube, we use DEFRA's publicly available LiDAR datasets and survey data to build precise digital terrain models for every project we visualise — no generic placeholders, no estimated topography.
Why Terrain Accuracy Matters for BNG & Ecology
Planning Credibility
Planning authorities increasingly scrutinise the accuracy of visualisation submitted in support of development proposals. A render built on accurate LiDAR terrain is demonstrably more credible than one produced from a generic landscape template. This matters especially for Landscape and Visual Impact Assessments, where the technical basis of visualisation is subject to review.
Ecological Accuracy
Many habitat types are terrain-dependent. Lowland wet grassland, fen, and reedbed habitats require specific hydrological conditions that are determined by terrain. A terrain model built from LiDAR data can accurately represent the drainage context of a proposed BNG site — supporting the credibility of the ecological case being made.
Investor & Buyer Confidence
For habitat bank operators selling biodiversity credits, terrain accuracy is a quality signal. A virtual tour or render of a proposed habitat bank that faithfully represents the actual site topography tells buyers and investors that the ecological case is grounded in physical reality, not aspiration.
What Is Terrain Generation?
Terrain generation is the process of constructing an accurate three-dimensional model of a site's ground surface, using elevation data from LiDAR surveys, Ordnance Survey datasets, or photogrammetric surveys. For ecology and BNG projects, terrain accuracy matters enormously: habitat types, drainage patterns, flood risk, and visual impact all depend on getting the ground model right.
Our terrain models incorporate actual topographic data, allowing us to produce renders and animations that reflect the true character of a landscape — its slopes, valleys, watercourses, and horizon lines — rather than a stylised or approximated version.

Terrain Generation as a Standalone Service
In addition to its role in our visualisation projects, terrain generation is available as a standalone technical service for ecology and planning practices who need accurate 3D ground models for their own use — in GIS platforms, presentation software, or other visualisation pipelines.
- LiDAR-derived 3D terrain models in OBJ, FBX, or DXF format
- Terrain models with OS mapping texture overlay
- Proposed design terrain incorporating engineering drawings
- Multi-resolution models for different levels of detail
- Hydrological overlay visualisation (flood risk, drainage catchment)

Data Sources We Work With
DEFRA LiDAR
The Environment Agency's LiDAR data portal provides 1m and 0.25m resolution elevation data for most of England, freely available to download. We use this data as the primary terrain source for the majority of UK ecology and BNG visualisation projects, ensuring that our models reflect the actual surveyed ground surface.
Ordnance Survey Data
For projects requiring broader landscape context — particularly aerial renders and flythroughs covering several kilometres — we supplement LiDAR with OS terrain and mapping data to extend the scene beyond the immediate site boundary.
Site Survey & Photogrammetry
For projects where very high local accuracy is required — particularly urban ecology schemes or complex ground modelling — we can incorporate client-provided site survey data or commission photogrammetric models from drone survey footage.
Proposed Design Grading
Where a project involves significant ground modelling — habitat creation earthworks, wetland excavation, berm construction — we incorporate your civil engineering drawings to model the proposed terrain as well as the existing condition. This enables accurate before-and-after terrain comparison.
FAQs
Is LiDAR data available for my site?
DEFRA LiDAR data covers the vast majority of England at 1m resolution, with 0.25m data available for many areas. Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland have equivalent datasets from their respective environmental agencies. We check coverage at brief stage and advise on alternatives if needed.
Can you model proposed earthworks alongside existing terrain?
Yes — we regularly work with civil engineering cut-and-fill drawings, berm design data, and wetland excavation plans to produce accurate models of proposed terrain alongside the existing LiDAR ground surface.
Can I use the terrain model in my own GIS or CAD software?
Yes — we deliver terrain models in standard formats (OBJ, FBX, DXF, GeoTIFF) compatible with ArcGIS, QGIS, AutoCAD, and other platforms. Specific format requirements should be discussed at brief stage.
